Teen and Child Counseling in Castle Rock

Who is Teen and Child Counseling For?

As a parent, it’s hard to know if your child is just "going through a phase" or if they are truly struggling. Child and adolescent therapy provides a dedicated space for kids to navigate the unique hurdles of growing up in today’s world. We often see families looking for support with:

  • The Overwhelmed Student: Children struggling with "perfectionism," test anxiety, or school refusal in high-pressure academic environments.

  • The Changing Teen: Adolescents dealing with the complexities of social media, identity formation, peer pressure, or sudden withdrawal from the family.

  • Big Life Transitions: Kids processing a divorce, a move to a new school, the loss of a pet, or the addition of a new sibling.

  • Emotional Regulation: Younger children who experience frequent "meltdowns," outbursts, or difficulty expressing their feelings in words.

  • Neurodiversity Support: Helping kids with ADHD, Autism, or sensory processing differences build confidence and navigate a world that isn't always built for them.

What Will Your Child Get Out of Counseling?

The goal of therapy at Hearth isn't just to "fix" a behavior; it’s to equip your child with a lifelong toolkit for mental wellness. When your child works with us, you can expect to see:

  • Emotional Literacy: They will learn to identify and name their feelings, reducing the need for "acting out" or "shutting down."

  • Increased Self-Esteem: Moving from a "fixed mindset" (I’m bad at this) to a "growth mindset" (I can learn to handle this).

  • Healthier Communication: Better ways for your teen to express their needs to you, reducing conflict and "door slamming" at home.

  • Coping Strategies: Practical tools for managing anxiety, "big feelings," and social stress in real-time.

  • Improved Resilience: The confidence to bounce back from setbacks, whether it’s a bad grade or a friendship conflict.

How Does Teen and Child Counseling Work?

We don't just treat the child; we support the whole family. Our approach is developmentally appropriate—meaning therapy for a 7-year-old looks very different than therapy for a 17-year-old.

  1. The Parent Consultation: We usually start with a session just for you. This allows us to hear your concerns and gather a full history of your child’s development without them in the room.
  2. Building the "Alliance": For teens, trust is everything. We create a confidential, non-judgmental space where they feel safe being themselves. For younger children, we use Play Therapy—because play is the natural language of childhood.
  3. The Active Journey: Through a mix of talk therapy, creative expression, and skill-building, we help your child process their challenges. We use evidence-based approaches like CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) tailored specifically for younger brains.
  4. Family Integration: We provide regular "Parent Check-ins" to update you on progress and give you "home-based" strategies to support the work we are doing in the office. Our goal is to strengthen the bond between you and your child.
